Bifocal Reading Glasses

If you struggle with seeing things both near and far, our bifocal eyeglasses can help you see clearly at any distance.

What are Bifocal Lenses?

Bifocal glasses have lenses that correct distance vision at the top and near vision at the bottom, making them ideal if you need help with both. These lenses serve as both reading glasses and regular prescription glasses in one frame.

How do Bifocal Lenses work?

Bifocal spectacles have two different prescriptions in one lens. If you look closely, you'll see a line across the middle where these prescriptions meet. The top half helps with seeing things far away, while the bottom half is designed for reading, as we usually look down when reading a book or checking our phones.

Bifocal glasses and sunglasses, like all multifocal eyewear, might take a little time to get used to. It typically takes about one to two weeks to fully adjust to them.

FAQ

Who should use bifocal glasses?

Bifocal eyeglasses are ideal for people with presbyopia, a condition where the eyeโ€™s lens loses flexibility with age, making it difficult to focus on close objects. Bifocal lens are also suitable for those who need vision correction for both distance and near vision.

How long does it take to adjust to bifocal glasses?

Most people feel comfortable using bifocals within 3-7 days, though it can take up to 2 weeks for full adjustment, especially if this is your first time using multifocal lenses. Initial sensations like slight oddness when switching gaze or leaning forward to read are normal, and usually fade quickly as your eyes and brain adapt.

Are there different types of bifocal lenses?

Yes, there are several types of bifocal lenses, including flat-top, round-seg, and executive bifocals. Each type has a different design and placement of the reading segment.

Do bifocal glasses have a visible line?

Traditional bifocal lenses have a visible line where the two prescriptions meet. However, there are also progressive lenses, which are a type of bifocal without a visible line and offer a gradual transition between prescriptions.

Bifocal or progressive lenses โ€” which is better?

It depends on your priorities. If you prefer a clearly divided zone for near and far vision, bifocals give a sharp line and quicker familiarity. If you want smoother transitions between distances (near, middle, far) with no visible line, progressives are more subtle. Choose based on what youโ€™ll use them for most, your budget, and how you weigh ease of adaptation versus seamless vision.

Can I drive safely with bifocals?

Yesโ€”once you're fully adjusted. The upper portion of the lens is designed for distance viewing, which is what youโ€™ll mainly use for driving. The lower segment is for reading or up-close tasks and shouldnโ€™t interfere when you're looking ahead. As always, during your first few days with bifocals, give yourself some extra careโ€”especially when going down stairs or using uneven surfaces.

Can I wear bifocal glasses all the time?

Yes, bifocal glasses can be worn all day for both distance and near vision tasks. However, some people might prefer to have separate pairs of glasses for different activities.

Will bifocal glasses work for computer use?

Bifocal glasses can be used for computer work, but the reading segment may not always be in the most convenient position for screen use. In such cases, computer-specific bifocals or progressive lenses might be a better option.

At what age do people start using bifocals?

Many adults begin considering bifocals around age 40-45, when presbyopia (difficulty focusing on nearby objects) tends to show up. Over time the near-vision decline becomes more pronounced, and between mid-40s to 60s is a common age range for switching to bifocals or other multifocal solutions.

What should I do if I have trouble adjusting to my bifocal glasses?

Try wearing them throughout the day, gently practice using the top for distance and the bottom for reading, and allow a week or soโ€”if things still feel off after that, your optician can help adjust fit or power.

How do I clean and care for my bifocal glasses?

Clean your bifocal glasses with a microfiber cloth and lens cleaning solution. Avoid using household cleaners or rough materials that can scratch the lenses.

Can I add bifocal lenses to any frame?

Yes, you can add bifocal lenses to most frames. We offer the option to customize your frames with bifocal lenses.
